Industrial & Construction Electrification

IAC's portfolio in industrial and construction has witnessed compounded growth by over 560% in the past 5-years. Electrification in industrial and construction sectors in Aotearoa is aimed at reducing emissions and improving efficiency. This shift is driven by advancements in renewable energy, energy storage technology, NZ government policies, and the need for sustainable practices.

Throughout our engagements with customers, we have heard from our customers that the benefits of electrification have been immense. Over the past few years, we hear the following benefits:
Reduced Emissions: Electrification helps lower greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants.
Cleaner Operations: Electric equipment can operate in confined spaces without harmful exhaust.
Cost Savings: Electric machinery can lead to lower operating costs over time.
Job Creation: Transitioning to electrified systems can create high-paying jobs in new technologies.

 

As contractors, we also come across some challenges as we grew from smaller scale electrical solutions to much more complex engineering & manufacturing solutions providers. Our engineers, technicians and sales team have observed that there are some limitations to:
Battery Technology: Heavy-duty equipment faces challenges with battery size and power capacity.
Charging Infrastructure: Adequate charging facilities are essential for operational efficiency.
Initial Investment: The upfront costs for electric equipment can be higher compared to traditional machinery.
Electricity Costs: The price of electricity relative to fossil fuels can impact the feasibility of electrification.

 

In Aotearoa, under 2% of heavy-duty construction equipment is electric, but this is expected to rise to 20-30% by 2030.  More electrification is occurring in smaller machinery, which is easier to adapt. There have been overseas initiatives like California's Clean Off-Road Equipment Incentive Project that provide financial support for adopting electric machinery, and IAC is lobbying the New Zealand Government to adopt or model some of the infrastructure investments to drive the increased electrification of industrial & commercial operations.

 
Many regional councils across Aotearoa are implementing stricter emission regulations, encouraging the shift to electric solutions. The Greater Wellington region has been examplary and IAC has been instrumental in helping the region in making this transition. Electrification in industrial and construction sectors is essential for a sustainable future, balancing environmental needs with economic growth.

Grid-connected construction site

IAC is helping New Zealand build utility-scale infrastructure such as wind farms and solar farms. These power systems rely on large plants and transmission grids. They are susceptible to single points of failure, making them vulnerable to extreme weather events.

IAC has partnered with regional subcontractors across Aotearoa to deliver grid-connected renewable energy proof-of-concepts. Our case studies from Kapiti (solar + BESS), Castle Point (wind) and the town of Ohakune demonstrate the robustness and viability of these approaches.
